Wellbeing on the objective dimension pertains to a person’s physical wellbeing, including the person’s physical body, physical surroundings, and material circumstances.
The Basics for Surviving
- Physical health, e.g. intact body parts, absence of disease
- Quality substances, e.g. clean (uncontaminated) air to breath, easy access to clean drinking water, ample fresh nutritious food to eat
- Safe shelter, including a comfortable bed for sleeping
- Clean surroundings, uncontaminated (including a well functioning waste disposal system)
- Body cleaning facilities (running water, soap, etc., in particular to prevent disease)
- Clothing
- HVAC system: heating/cooling, ventilation, air conditioning – whether active or passive
- Medical supplies: medications, band aids, wound disinfectant, etc.
For Thriving
In addition to the basics for existing physically in a healthy and comfortable place, a person’s quality of life is enhanced when the person has access to various tools needed to manage the person’s life and achieve goals and desires. These tools may be the person’s private possessions, or shared collectively in some way. These include:
- Furniture
- Household systems: kitchen and kitchen appliances (including refrigerator), washing machine, vacuum cleaner, etc.
- Communication systems (smartphone, internet connection)
- Computing systems: computer/laptop, printer, etc.
- Construction tools: hammer and nails, electric drill, etc.
- Transportation: private (bicycle, scooter, motorcycle, car, etc.) and public (bus, train, airplane, ship)
- Creation tools: paper, pens, colors and brushes, etc.
- Entertainment tools: TV, earphones, musical instruments, etc.
